One of the many great things about Kalākaua’s reign was his efforts to show the rest of the world Hawaiʻi’s standing as an independent nation worthy of their recognition and respect, through not only our intellect and character, represented internationally through his own stature, but also through appearance and symbolism by blending traditional Hawaiian culture with European style, during a time when everything was extremely ornate and stylized and craftsmanship was at the highest level.
Kalākaua’s monogram represents not only the monarch himself, but everything he’s done for the advancement of the Hawaiian people. Hoʻoulu Lāhui.
